The Painters

The Painters is a testament to the veracity of its name; a synesthetic aural canvas that sees disparate styles combine and boundaries dissolve. The opener, “Sun Never Sets,” is a burst of electric, speaker-tearing guitar solos, while the acoustic “Kitchen Tiles” emits campfire-like warmth. “Somewhere'' morphs from a humble folk serenade into an acid-coated blend of dewey field recordings, tropical slide guitar, and valium saxophone before launching into the synth-laden, 80s-inspired anthem, “Wait For You”.  Bourque’s lyrics, however, form a throughline, weaving an existential narrative that questions the meaning of love, friendship, and truth; “Backin’ Up,” uses repetition to induce a hypnotic trance, while Bourque offers his most quietly sincere musings on the ties that bind us. “Rolling Thunder”—a twangy indie suite—bookends the album with blown-out guitar leads, three-part harmonies, and lyrics that ask questions of loyalty, presence, and honesty.
