That Could Be Me

The Painters

“That Could Be Me,” the band’s most straightforward-pop offering to-date, was penned by songwriter Alex Bourque. Lyrically, the verses are a laundry list of a lovers’ hopes and desires, delivered in an upbeat yet defeated tone, before they are conceded in the chorus’ overtly lonely hook: “I hope you find what you need / I think in time you will see / that could be me.” The song’s woeful subject matter is pillowed by the steady and soft touch of drummer Alex Lavoie, Boguski’s melodic, Motown-worthy bass lines, and Halls’ exploratory, and emotional guitar leads, creating an atmosphere that marries the atmospheric, raw emotionality of Beach Fossils with the complex jangle of The Feelies.
