As a follow up to her debut project The Complete Flex Season (rel. December 2020), REAL TALK RADIO presents a further exploration into SLM’s fascination with old media forms and modes of communication. This four-track EP is largely centred around the medium of the radio and how it has served as a marker of commercial success for mainstream artists since the advent of the airwaves. The project opens with our focus track, ‘JUST LIKE THAT’ - introducing us to SLM’s quintessential flow over a playful - almost childlike - melody. Here, SLM is taunting her listeners in a game of tag, reasserting her dominance in the rap game. We then meet the first single off the project, ‘RENT FREE’, which serves as a tribute to SLM’s introduction to the music industry and experience growing up on stan Twitter in the early 2010s. The title of this track functions doubly to allude to the infectious nature of the song’s production (which features echoing drum patterns on a loop), while also speaking to the need of an artist to stay focused despite the day-to-day distractions that may arise. We are then carried through to ‘BIG BAG’, where SLM and La Reina go back-to-back in a trapped out, Carribean-infused strip club anthem, which invokes the intoxicating feeling of being surrounded by cash. The EP concludes with ‘HEAVY’, the project’s second lead-up single and a track that features SLM’s more intimate side. This final lo-fi, dream-like universe is curated by Montreal’s own YAMA//SATO (producer credits: Skiifall, Louis Vuitton). REAL TALK RADIO will drop concurrently on August 6th with a short film that weaves an overarching storyline out of each track. With the release of each single, a short music video will accompany on socials, as a teaser to the short. A week later, SLM’s upcoming merch collaboration with Montreal art-house GRIMEY will be released, featuring four pieces to correspond to the four tracks off the EP. REAL TALK RADIO will continue to propel SLM as Montreal’s rising star, the perfect playlist to encapsulate the picturesque feeling of the summer nights.
