Lash’s debut EP, House of Women, inspired by Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia de Lorca’s tragedy La Casa de Bernarda Alba, is an examination of the ways in which the feminine self, in her multiplicity, navigates an inhospitable environment driven by external expectations and demands, but most importantly, they ways in which internalized narratives of femininity cause in-fighting within the self. With vocals in Spanish, House of Women’s first three tracks explore different stages of self discipline, ambition and betrayal. The final title track, a 9-minute elegy in three parts, encapsulates the fractured and conflicted elements of the self. Driven by guitar feedback, noise and interlacing vocal lines, House of Women laments our inability to escape ourselves. With each previous track representing an element of the self unable to escape the whole, this conclusion offers a journey to caustic self acceptance.
