God’s Mom is the dissident pop project of Canadian artists Bria Salmena and Andrew Matthews. Carrying the post-punk DNA of their prior projects, their raved-out electronics and acerbic vocals pirouette between darkness, tenderness, and transgression. Through the lens of her Italian heritage and personal storytelling, Salmena slips into a prima donna-esque persona, somewhere between starlet and sadist.
Vocally, she reimagines classic tarantellas into a distorted portrait of the present. As is the case with most songs in the God’s Mom canon, Salmena sings in her family’s native Italian tongue, allowing her to dialogue with and honor her ancestry, while also opening up a new window of influence and a new type of vulnerable expression.
Matthews and Salmena subvert trashy club production and poppy glitz into a space of uninhibited anti-coolness. They jest across influences - - both “good” and “poor” taste, with equal appreciation, and land in a smeared space of freedom.
